Object Lesson

Section: Introduce the doctrine

Object Lesson

Display a shelf bracket, a barbell, and a diamond.

Ask: What do a bracket, a barbell, and a diamond have to do with pressure?

A bracket is designed to support the pressure of weight on a shelf

A barbell provides pressure to our muscles as we lift it, forcing our muscles to work in new ways and develop strength

A diamond is the result of severe pressure over a long span of time on organic matter.

We sometimes think of pressure as a bad thing.? It can be, if we are not prepared, or if it comes on too fast.? But without pressure there would be no muscles, there would be no diamonds.

In pre-mortal life we were prepared – tutored, loved, nurtured, taught – and when the plan of salvation was presented and Jesus Christ volunteered to be our Savior, there was a dissenting voice.? A pressure started, to consider two alternatives – and eventually it turned into a war.? Those who were well prepared, chose to follow God’s plan – but the pressure was too much for others.? Eventually they were cast out – and those who remained valiant, triumphed under the pressure.? That is each one of us, and all who have been born into mortality.? We are developing into Father in Heaven’s diamonds.? Diamonds are not only beautiful, they are strong, one of the hardest minerals in the world.? Already, we have withstood tremendous pressure.? We wouldn’t be here if we hadn’t.? And now, we still can, and must – and will only become stronger and more beautiful as a result.

Treat Idea:

A cute idea that goes along with this object lesson is to bring a ring pop for each girl. ? The Dollar Store has them in 4 packs for $1. ?Attach to the little handout!
