Attention Activity

Blow up a balloon and tie the end. The balloon represents the body that houses the spirit. Pop the balloon and explain that if we don?t take care of our physical bodies our spirits suffer. Write quotes on slips of paper and place them inside balloons around the room. Throughout the lesson invite girls to pop the balloons and read the quotes inside to the class.

We need a physical body in order to become like Heavenly Father. He created them and knows how to best care for them. The Word of Wisdom was given to us to help us be healthy and learn how to use our bodies correctly in this life and in the next. Our bodies can affect our spiritual sensitivities. We are promised spiritual and temporal blessings when we follow the Lord?s Law of Health:

  • ?Peace that comes from obedience (D&C 88:76)
  • ?Strength to run and not be weary (D&C 89:20)
  • ?Find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge (D&C 89:19)
  • ?Health in your navel and marrow in your bones (D&C 89:17)
  • ?The Destroying Angel shall pass by you (D&C 89: 18-19)

Receive a fullness of joy when spirit and healthy body are united (D&C 93:33-34)

(As found on our Seminary Villager site)

Say to your class: “I have a treat here for each one of you. ?(Pass out brownies). ?Before eating them, read the recipe to make sure it contains appropriate ingredients as far as the Word of Wisdom is concerned. ?(Write it down on a recipe card if you have one – make it look real!)

  • 4 oz unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 stick butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon cow manure
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

Melt butter and chocolate in a large pan. Remove from heat and add sugar and vanilla. Stir in eggs, flour, cow manure and chocolate chips. Pour into a 9×13 pan sprayed with cooking spray. Bake in oven at 350 for 10 minutes.

(Wait for reaction.) ?You can see that the secret ingredient in this special recipe is cow manure. ?It won?t hurt you?it?s all natural and perfectly safe! ?It?s just a little bit and one time certainly won?t hurt you. ?All the good stuff will cover it up.

There are some things we would never put in our bodies, let alone pass our lips; but sometimes there are those who might think it is nothing to drink or smoke or take drugs just once?just a little won?t hurt?and yet these are far more harmful than eating a teaspoon of manure.” ?(Assure them that there is no manure in the brownies and they can eat them?that this was just an illustration of some of the excuses people use for breaking the Word of Wisdom.)

Additional Ideas

Bring two (or more) pair of scissors to class, one dull and one sharp.? Give each girl a piece of paper with an outline of a temple.? Let them cut out the temple starting with the dull scissors, then let them use the sharp scissors to demonstrate how much easier it is to use a tool in good condition.? How do scissors get dull?? Ask how a pair of scissors is like their body and how dull or sharp scissors relates to our bodies.
